“AI systems erode expertise, short-circuit decision-making, and isolate people from each other. They are anathema to the kind of evolution, transparency, cooperation, and accountability that give vital institutions their purpose and sustainability.”
Woodrow Hartzog & Jessica Silbey, How AI Destroys Institutions

About the Symposium

GW JOLT’s 2027 Annual Symposium will explore the various dimensions of Professors Woodrow Hartzog and Jessica Silbey’s argument, advanced in their article How AI Destroys Institutions, that AI systems fundamentally threaten the social and institutional fabric upon which democratic governance, professional expertise, and civic life depend.

Drawing together leading scholars from across law, technology, and the social sciences, the symposium will examine whether and how AI erodes the core properties of vital institutions — their capacity to evolve, to operate transparently, to foster cooperation, and to remain accountable to the people they serve.

Scholarship presented at the symposium will be considered for publication in Volume 3 of the GW Journal of Law & Technology.
